What is LoJack?

When you shop for new cars, you may notice that most new car dealers offer LoJack. The LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System is a tracking system that allows you to locate your car in the event it is stolen. The LoJack System is a small and silent radio frequency transmitter that is hidden in your car when it is installed. When you report your car stolen, a radio signal can be sent to activate your car's system. The police can then use their LoJack tracking system to locate the car.

LoJack also offers an Early Warning Recovery System that alerts you when your car is being moved. You may receive alerts by phone, email or pager.

LoJack: The Benefits

Quick recovery: Over a million new and used cars are stolen in the United States each year. Of cars with LoJack, approximately 90% are recovered. In addition, since cars equipped with LoJack are usually recovered very quickly, they have far less damage than other stolen cars that have been located.

Lower insurance: Many insurance companies offer auto insurance discounts for vehicles equipped with LoJack systems. Some states, including Florida, New York, New Jersey and Texas, require insurance companies to offer a discount for policies on cars with LoJack. While rates vary by state and company, it may be possible to get a discount of up to 30% off of the comprehensive portion of your insurance premiums. If the savings from lower insurance premiums do not convince you, think about the deductible you will have to pay if your car is stolen. Wondering if your car is a popular model for auto theft? Check the 21st Century Auto website for the most commonly stolen car models.

Police approved: The LoJack system works in conjunction with police departments across the nation. The police use LoJack computers in their ground and air systems to help them track stolen cars.

LoJack is hidden: Unlike other systems with small antennae that may be broken off, LoJack is not visible to thieves. There are multiple places on the car LoJack may be hidden and even the car's owner is not informed where their system is placed. This makes the system nearly impossible for thieves to disable.

LoJack's Guarantee: LoJack is so confident their system is effective, they offer a limited two year guarantee. If your car is stolen within two years of your LoJack purchase and is not located within 24 hours, LoJack will refund the purchase price of your LoJack system (up to the MSRP).

How to Get LoJack

Nearly all major car dealers sell and install LoJack systems. Online car dealers such as Edmunds.com allow you to easily add LoJack to your car purchase. For a one-time fee, LoJack can be installed in your car; the purchase price can be added to your financing package. LoJack can be installed in new or used cars and you may purchase LoJack for an existing vehicle. Keep in mind that the price of adding LoJack to your car is negotiable. Dealers make a substantial profit when they resell LoJack, often selling the system for twice what they paid. To reduce the amount you pay for LoJack, ask the finance manager to see his cost on the unit and offer $50 to $100 over that amount. If you cannot get the price you want, you can always purchase the unit through another dealer or go to LoJack directly.
